How to Wash and Care for a Cotton Kurti

Gentle washing is what keeps a cotton kurti soft and true to shape: cold water, a light hand, and drying in the shade.

By Korai Studio, Jaipur · Updated 16 October 2026

Cotton is the easiest fabric to live in, and it stays that way when it is washed gently. This is how we recommend looking after a Korai Studio piece: 100% cotton, 60×60 weave, with a naturally soft hand feel.

  1. 01

Wash by hand in cold water. Fill a basin with cold water and a mild detergent, then press the kurti under the water and let it soak for a few minutes. Avoid rubbing or twisting the fabric, because that roughs up the surface and pulls a shape out of line. Cold water also helps the colour, shape and finish last.

  2. 02

Wash a new print on its own the first time. As a precaution, wash a new printed or striped piece separately from whites and pastels the first time, so any loose colour cannot travel onto other clothes.

  3. 03

Rinse well and press out the water. Rinse until no soap remains, then press the water out gently with your palms, or roll the kurti in a clean towel. Do not wring it.

  4. 04

Dry in the shade. Air dry away from direct sunlight, which fades colour and dulls the soft feel. Hang the kurti by the shoulders, or lay it flat if it has tie-ups, tassels or embroidery.

  5. 05

Iron on medium heat, on the reverse. Use medium heat if needed and press gently on the reverse side, so embroidery and prints keep their detail and colour.

  6. 06

Look after the hand-finished details. Tassels, tie-ups and embroidery are finished by hand. Untangle ties before washing and let tassels dry flat rather than hanging them wet.

  7. 07

Store dry and out of the sun. Keep the kurti dry and away from direct sunlight. Hang plain pieces, and fold anything with tassels so they are not crushed.
